Equine Sports Massage is not a luxury pampering treatment for your horse, but an essential part of the maintenance & treatment of all horses and ponies. Therapeutic Massage can be used to treat a wide range of muscular problems and vets will often refer horses for massage treatment.
Over 60% of a horses body mass is muscle (compared to humans at 35-40%), and many physical and behavioural problems can be traced back to muscle tension and dysfunction.
We ask our horses to perform a wide range of ‘unnatural’ movements and also wear a whole host of ‘accessories’ and this can cause pain and muscle tension. A damaged or tense muscle cannot perform properly so you will never get the best out of your horse or pony if you do not maintain, treat and generally take good care of its muscles.

An Equine Sports Massage Therapist (ESMT) is a ‘muscle specialist’. They have an in depth knowledge of muscular anatomy & physiology and specialise in the maintenance and treatment of muscular disorders in horses.
Under the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966, any treatment carried out by a therapist must have Veterinary Consent. Therefore before treating your horse I will have to get written consent from your vet. You can download a form to print out here. You just need to get it signed before I visit your horse and commence treatment. Alternatively, I can phone your vet and speak to them personally. It will not generally be necessary for your vet to see your horse prior to my visit, unless there are concerns about his/her health.
